Tammy served in the U.S. Army for eight years, including a tour in the Middle East during Operation Desert Storm. Her overseas deployment included many nights sleeping in an Army tent far into the desert, alone but for the few fellow soldiers on the same detail. On her tour, Tammy was required to deal with the horrific wounds and deaths of those involved in the war. After returning to the U.S., her experiences left her in need of a “battle buddy” to be her companion and to give her a sense of protection.
Tammy was presented with Rex, a handsome German Shepherd. Rex is a battle buddy in every sense of the word. He not only keeps Tammy company, he has a goofy side that makes her laugh. Tammy and Rex have made human and canine friends in their neighborhood, and have given each other a happier life. They are truly best friends forever.
Tammy has been an enthusiastic volunteer with Pets for Vets Houston for nearly two years. Her understanding of the issues that returning veterans must deal with has made her invaluable to the organization.
