Roosevelt Hayes is a retired Marine who served our country as a Private First Class at Camp Lejeune. After his service, he returned to civilian life and now lives in Coral Springs, Florida, with his adult sister. Throughout his life, Roosevelt and his late wife shared their home with several white fluffy Bichons, and those dogs represented some of the happiest years of his life. Roosevelt found a Pets for Vets flier at a local VA and decided it was time to try to get those happy days back.
Before Newton came into his life, Roosevelt was having a hard time with depression and anxiety. His days had become very quiet and repetitive. He often stayed in his bedroom until one or two in the afternoon and rarely left the house. Mornings were especially hard, where the motivation to get up was a constant battle. Roosevelt knew a dog would help get him back into a normal routine. He was looking for a small dog, one that reminded him of his past and could provide comfort and a reason to start each morning.
After several months of searching, Newton was found at a rescue in Los Angeles. From the moment he was discovered, it was clear he was something special. Newtons fur was a light tan color that reminded everyone of a Fig Newton cookie making his name a perfect fit. Coincidentally Roosevelt also had "Newton" as one of his favorite names as he wanted to name his dog after famous inventors, so that was the first sign that this dog was meant to find Roosevelt. Newton displayed a strong desire to always be around his human, which we knew was important for Roosevelt.
When Roosevelt first saw Newton, his giant smile said everything, and he immediately felt happy again. Newtons' cute little teddy bear face is impossible not to love, but it was his constant presence that won Roosevelt's heart. Newton became his little shadow, reminding him that there was so much life waiting to be lived.
Since being matched with Newton, Roosevelt’s life has changed. He now wakes up early each morning and walks Newton three to four times a day. Getting out of bed is no longer a struggle but has become a responsibility he looks forward to. Caring for Newton has brought back a sense of purpose into Roosevelt’s daily life.
Roosevelt enjoys taking Newton to the park, watching him play, and proudly showing off his “cool tricks” to his neighbors. His favorite thing to do is to simply watch Newton be a dog. He also loves preparing homemade meals and enrichment activities for him, taking pride in caring for someone again. Newton has helped Roosevelt find his motivation, and Roosevelt has given Newton the constant affection he so desires.
Newton may only weigh eight pounds, but the impact he’s made is much greater. He is proof that something so small can truly make a huge difference. Newton has taken on a role far bigger than his size by helping Roosevelt remember how to live again. Today, Newton is completely loved and adored, spoiled with 24/7 belly rubs (his favorite), and Roosevelt is no longer alone. They truly were each other's perfect match!
